New registration plates started on 6th June, 2008. Automobile plates follow the 520 mm x 110 mm dimensions, except for motorcycles. There are also plates with a dimension of 520 mm x 110 mm. Plates have a white background with a black border. The plate follows this layout: to the left, there is a blue-colored field containing Montenegro's international automobile code (MNE); continuing in white background, the registration code of the city where the vehicle was registered in, then the coat-of-arms of Montenegro following by the registration number, which can contain both letters and numbers. Police vehicles have blue plates, while military vehicles have green plates. Now, there are separate registration codes for the following cities: Andrijevica, Danilovgrad, Kolašin, Mojkovac, Plav, Rožaje, Šavnik, Tivat and Žabljak. The only municipality left without its own code is Plužine, which will continue using the code NK (used also for Nikšić).
